THE CITY IS ASLEEP.

03:57LOWER MERION, PA

He was a Philadelphia kid by birth and an Italian kid by childhood — six years in Rieti and Reggio Emilia, learning the game from worn VHS tapes mailed across the ocean. Back home, at Lower Merion High School, he broke Wilt Chamberlain's Southeastern Pennsylvania scoring record and went straight to the 1996 draft, seventeen years old. The stories that followed him for twenty years all start the same way: the gym was dark, the city was asleep, and he was already there.

NO. 8 — THE HUNGER YEARS

EIGHT

The 8 years were pure appetite. An eighteen-year-old trading moves with legends, an air-balled playoff exit in Utah answered with a decade of obsession. By 2000 the league ran through Los Angeles — three straight titles, and the youngest star in the building was the one rising earliest in it.

NO. 24 — THE CRAFT YEARS

TWENTY-FOUR

In 2006 he changed his number and rebuilt the game from the floor up. Less air, more angles; the fadeaway became a signature you could set a watch to. Back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010, two Finals MVPs, and a name for the philosophy underneath it all — Mamba Mentality, which he always insisted meant something plain: the work, done completely, every day, beginning in the dark.

Sixty points on fifty shots, at thirty-seven, in the last game he ever played. The sun was coming up on twenty years of nights.

THE WORK HAPPENS IN THE DARK.

The light is what's left. Mamba forever.
